Murder
On Friday, April 28, 2023, at about 5:17 p.m., police responded to a report on 2nd Street, Belize City. Upon arrival, they observed a silver Ford Escape SUV parked on the right side of 2nd Street facing towards Baymen Avenue, they also observed Charles Canton, a 27-year-old, Belizean Mortgage officer of mile 21 Old Northern Highway, Sandhill Village, Belize District seated in the driver’s seat with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to his body.
Initial investigations revealed that, at about 5:23 p.m., Charles Canton was seated in the driver seat of his SUV loading a 9mm pistol. At the time he was along with Jose Montero and Tehje Vaughan.
Allegedly Canton placed his black 9mm pistol on the hand rest between the two front seats whilst loading the magazine, and shortly after Tehje Vaughan who was seated in the back seat allegedly picked up the firearm, pointed it towards Charles Canton’s direction, and pulled the trigger.
The bullet entered the back of Canton’s seat, causing injuries to him.
Police recovered (1) magazine containing 15 live. 9mm rounds of ammunition, (1) box containing 45 live 9mm rounds of ammunition, (1) licensed black .9mm Springfield Armory Piston.
The lifeless body of Charles Canton was transported to KHMH where he was pronounced dead on arrival. On Saturday, April 29, 2023, police formally arrested and charged Tehje Vaughan, a 24-year-old, Belizean Customer service Representative of Yarbrough Road, Belize City for the crime of Manslaughter by negligence.
