Precisely 2 Years Of The Pandemic – Where Are We ?

The declaration of the COVID-19 Pandemic was officially done 2 years ago on this date.

Belize has not done so well in the category of population ratio to COVID deaths (see chart below), and although 1 single death due to COVID is devastating for the families and love-ones of the victim, our country has seen (to date) 622 Deaths due to COVID-19.

The health professionals in Belize are aware of these statements by the WHO, and our hope is that we have brilliant strategist within our health-system that can tackle COVID, and get even better results.
We believe that we can do better as a nation.

The following Are The Opening Remarks By The Director-General Of The World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the 150th. session of W.H.Os Executive Board

This Sunday marks two years since I declared a public health emergency of international concern – the highest level of alarm under international law – over the spread of COVID-19.

Two years later, almost 350 million cases have been reported, and more than 5.5 million deaths – and we know these numbers are an underestimate.

On average last week, 100 cases were reported every three seconds, and somebody lost their life to COVID-19 every 12 seconds.

Since Omicron was first identified just nine weeks ago, more than 80 million cases have been reported to WHO – more than were reported in the whole of 2020. It’s true that we will be living with COVID for the foreseeable future, and that we will need to learn to manage it through a sustained and integrated system for acute respiratory diseases, which will provide a platform for preparedness for future pandemics.

But learning to live with COVID cannot mean that we give this virus a free ride.
It cannot mean that we accept almost 50 thousand deaths a week, from a preventable and treatable disease.

The factors that may be best for comparison with Belize are population and regional. Here is how we are doing in those categories.
